Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the ability to contest certain calls from the official, mirroring the practice already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
