Administration figures and Republican members have hailed the execution of a 2020 US drug trafficking indictment, while Democratic leaders have decried the action as a infringement of Venezuela's self-determination.
Official Reactions: Celebration and Defense
The nation's top prosecutor proclaimed that Maduro and his wife face charges in a federal court, encompassing plots related to narco-terrorism, drug smuggling, and weapons violations. "The defendants will shortly confront the full wrath of American justice on American soil," the declaration said. It concluded by praising the president for demanding justice and thanking the courageous armed forces for a successful operation.
"Maduro is NOT the legitimate leader of Venezuela... He is the leader of a drug trafficking cartel... and he is facing charges for pushing drugs into the US," said the top US diplomat.
The US Vice-President echoed this sentiment, saying that the administration had offered multiple chances for de-escalation but was adamant that drug trafficking must cease. "Maduro is the latest person to find out that the President keeps his word," the statement added.
