The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.
The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are rising, although slowly. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
