England and Wales Pitted in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England and Wales will face off in an identical pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, setting up a highly-anticipated pool stage clash in Australia. They are joined in Group F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This pairing recalls their infamous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at Twickenham contributed to the English team's shock early exit.

Key Group Pairings

Ireland and Scotland also share a group together, replicating the situation from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, they claimed a 36-14 victory, with their opponents unable to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both impressed as underdogs in France, round out that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet holders and world number one South Africa until the final, presuming the Springboks win their own group.

Tournament Implications

Should the pools play out according to the current world rankings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from both the English and Ireland until the championship decider.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same side of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their great rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Group A.

The Wallabies will open the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to launch the competition.

Elsewhere, reigning champions South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Los Pumas will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and Canada as the tournament expands to twenty-four nations from the twenty who competed in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a last-16 stage for the very first time in Rugby World Cup history.

Although the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's heavyweights early on, they will meet the second-placed team from Pool B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the other six pool winners will face a third-placed side from the pool stages.
